International Sex Workers Rights Day was created in 2001, when over 25,000 sex workers gathered in India for a festival, despite public outcry and the removal of their permit.
Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee organized the 2001 event. Since sex workers have marked this anniversary as an international event; non-profits and other groups use it to educate workers about their rights and provide information to help them deal with various issues that go hand in hand with the industry.
